Pop Picker Pat in Peel Vote
In 1988 Everton F.C. signed Scottish winger Pat Nevin for a then tribunal record of £925,000. Turned down by Celtic because he was considered to be too small, he left Glasgow for Chelsea. There he helped the club win the Second Division Championship in the 1983-84 season. A former student of Glasgow College, he regularly votes in the John Peel Festive 50.
Full name: Patrick Kevin Francis Michael Nevin
Birthplace: Glasgow
DoB: 06/09/63
What subjects did you study at Glasgow College?
B.A. Commerce. Purely functional because I reckoned it would get me a job when I finished it. As a sideline I studied serious intakes of large amounts of alcohol.
Are you aware that Liverpool Polytechinc are offering a course in Combining Science & Football?
Yes, but it does not interest me much.
Who are your favourite bands?
I always mention the Cocteau Twins, New order, Durutti Column, The Blue Nile, Jesus & Mary Chain, etc, but now I’m back hooked on the John Peel Show again. I tape the shows, listen to them in the car to work during the week, then edit and keep my favourite stuff……he really is playing some great stuff again.
What’s the best record or tape that you’d call a bargain?
Some girl once gave me the old Joy Divison single with the little drummer boy on the front. It’s worth a lot of money now, although it’s not a great record!
Have you ever burnt a copy of the Karma Sutra, whilst listening to “Sport on Two’s” second half commentry?
No, but I once quoted Albert Camus like a complete smart-arse on “Two”. Also I once heard Gordon Durie say ‘obviously’ seventeen times in one, two minute interview.
Who’s got your vote in this year’s John Peel Festive 50?
Three of the following: MC Buzz B –Follow; PJ Harvey – Dress; R.E.M. – Losing my religion; Dirts Man – Never Trouble You; Syra M Benza – Icha, Phil Gamadge & The Night Train – Slide Machine.
You’re a top promoter, and you have the choice of any three bands for a ‘Christmas Special’. Which bands would you choose?
I’d try to get McGowan back for a Pogues/Dubliners bash; New Order (but try to get Barney in a bad mood, so it’s more like a punk gig); then mellow out with the Blue Nile.
Who’s going to win the league this season?
I don’t care too much who wins the league if it’s not Everton….but I do hope it’s one of the teams who play their football on the ground.
Motto?
For interviews, how can anyone know me when I don’t even know myself?
